Awww, shucks! A meme.

March 31, 2009

Stargrace at MMOQuests has tagged me in a meme.  It's been a LONG time since I've been tagged, I thought I'd faded into blogging obscurity, so it's nice to be thought of!
Here are the rules:

When accepting this auspicious award, you must write a post bragging about it, including the name of the misguided soul [...]

Questing in EverQuest? Weird.

March 30, 2009

So, on a whim on Saturday night I decided I wanted to play EQLive again.  I do this now and then, every couple of years.  I get nostalgic for what I once had and try to go after it again.  Not this time, though!  This time is a whole new experience, and I’m not even [...]

Can't believe I am doing this…

March 29, 2009

What am I doing right now?  Installing the latest Everquest expansion – Seeds of Destruction.  That's right, not EQ2, but EQ1.
Mostly driven by things like the FoH forums all going out and buying Macs to play on the EQ Mac server, and other bloggers like Tipa and Stargrace having a great time in the game [...]

Kaplan on WoW Questing

March 27, 2009

In an awesome talk at GDC, Jeff Kaplan speaks out about 9 problems with questing in WoW.
I have to say that I agree with all of these, except one:
I actually wish that the number was smaller. I think it’s great to limit people in how much pure text they can force on the player. [...]

So I downloaded the 10 day free trial of the Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria.  I was really excited to try the game out after hearing so many good things from Michael and other folks.  I downloaded the client prior to the Book 7 patch, and made a Hobbit and got it [...]

Runes of Magic: One Step Closer to Domination

March 23, 2009

My coworker m3mnoch made a prognostication earlier this month, claiming that Runes of Magic will completely dominate subscription MMOs in revenue this year.
we all know that freemium games pwn subscription games as far as subscribers.  this is what you don’t know yet:  before the end of the year ‘09, runes of magic will [...]

Army funds Everquest II player study

March 23, 2009

A team of economists, sociologists and computer scientists from the University of Minnesota are using Everquest II as a means to study real-world human behavior.  We've talked about how the 3 years of anonymized play data from EQ2 is now being used in research – and the U of M is now jumping into the [...]

March 22, 2009

It looks like we’re now seeing the very first iteration of what could be the first 3D virtual world on the iPhone.  Sparkle IM currently allows those who pay $4.99 for the application the ability to chat via IM and offline IM with Second Life residents.  Eventually, Sparkle will have full 3D avatars, an economy, [...]

Transformative Works and Cultures

March 22, 2009

Transformative Works and Cultures, or TWC, is a peer-reviewed journal about entertainment, media, gaming, fan communities and fan fiction.  Its articles take everyday elements of media that we know and love, analyze them, and then relate them to larger cultural issues like feminism, politics, and race studies.  The first volume was largely about fan communities [...]
