Guide to FarmVille Ribbons

October 31, 2009

I’ll admit it, I’m completely addicted to FarmVille.  FarmVille has these ribbons you can earn, which are basically like achievements or badges.  I’ve gone through and made a guide for each and every ribbon available.  Click that link and on the left you’ll see the list of guides – you can click each one to [...]

Trying Torchlight

October 30, 2009

It feels like everywhere I go, people are talking about Torchlight and how great it is.  I felt the need to try it out, so I downloaded the demo last night.  I was pretty blown away by how fun, polished, and awesome the game is.  I played an alchemist, and had a really fun time [...]

October 27, 2009

According to Massively, a Chinese company, Aurora Technology is now requiring web cam verification of gender in order to pick a character’s gender.  The goal?  To make avatars an exact interpretation of real life gender, i.e., no males playing female characters.
The ruling currently only affects the Aurora-developed game King of the World, but there’s always [...]

How NOT to do Microtransactions

October 22, 2009

Everyone is jumping on the microtransaction bandwagon, and why not?  It’s proving to be quite successful for MMOs, social games, Facebook applications, and even mobile applications.  For someone researching microtransactions, it is completely overwhelming to do research online.  There is so much “do this, do that” but not enough education about what mistakes NOT to [...]

An Update on my Aion Experience

October 21, 2009

After hearing about how much of a grind it is at higher levels, I think I made the right [...]

Seasonal Events in MMOs

October 20, 2009

Gordon at We Fly Spitfires thinks that Seasonal Events in MMOs are getting to be old stale hat.
Anyway, as I was saying, do we really need all of these seasonal holidays in game? World of Warcraft seems to continually run one and I think I lost interest in them months ago.
I can guarantee that if [...]

MailChimp: A Top Notch Mailing List Management Product

October 20, 2009

I generally don’t post about Community Management, but someone specifically asked about newsletter software so I decided to write this one.
When I first started at Metaplace, I was tasked with finding a good mailing list software to use to handle our outward newsletters and communication.  This was a new venture for me, and I did [...]

Taint: Biggest guild I have EVER been in.

October 14, 2009

I am probably the ultimate MMO tourist, I check just about everything out.  The only game that I’ve stayed subscribed to constantly since 2004 is World of Warcraft, and I have a VERY weird relationship with it.
My main server has been Malfurion for the past couple of years, but after a guild fall-out I transferred [...]

Women in gaming, from a transwoman

October 11, 2009

I just wanted to draw attention to a post over at GeekFeminism.org that talks about how yes, there are women in gaming.  And, there are transwomen too!  I thought there were some interesting points in this blog post.
Role-playing games were the best, of course. Back when I was struggling with my identity and wasn’t generally [...]
