WoW's New Recruit-a-Friend

by Cuppycake on August 5, 2008

This just in on Worldofwarcraft.com with details here.  They are now running a promotion that will grant a user the following if they recruit a friend:

  • Triple experience from mobs AND quests while the two are grouped for 90 days.
  • The ability to bump one of the character’s up in level if it gets behind (up to level 60) for 90 days.
  • A free Zhevra mount.
  • 30 Days game time if they convert to a subscription
  • Characters on both accounts can summon each other once per hour. (for 90 days)

The only thing that runs through my mind is multibox.  I’m a little annoyed because I have a second account already and so does Luke.  This is crazy though.  Triple XP?  Free levels?  I can’t imagine how fast 1-60 would be if it were 3 times faster.  That’s just godly.

Thoughts on this?

I think you ought to recruit ME… but I bet this is for people who haven’t previously had an active subscription. That’s generally how they do things, but yeah, the benefits are unprecedented for sure!

Wow, sounds awesome. If I were a wow player I’d love to get in on this.

I imagine Blizz has thought of this and doesnt care..but this will certainly make it easier for multi-boxers and people running multiple accounts to powerlevel.

Wow, totally agree on the multibox standpoint. This is a great way to get even more accounts. I always said EQ1 should have done something like this during its hayday and games never do. Blizzard figured this out.

This is really very smart of Blizzard. When you already have such heavy market saturation, I’m sure it’s really hard to come up with new ideas to snag new people. Obviously it would be great for people who want to multibox. But this would really be great for the people who’ve always wanted to play with their friends, but never did it. Well played, World of Warcraft…

What is Blizzard afraid of, I wonder?

“What is Blizzard afraid of, I wonder?”

I don’t think they’re afraid of anything. What do they have to be afraid of? They have WoW continually trucking along, an expansion hitting within the next few months that will give months of retention. Not to mention Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 in production which are both giganticly anticipated ips.

I’d bet it’s more like “Just how many subscribers CAN we get?” Who cares about uniques…multiboxers are another $14.99 a month.

Hmm. I don’t like it.

I’d rather see Blizzard focus on making levels 1-60 a more enjoyable experience than give us more tools to get through them quickly. But that doesn’t seem to be their plan.

Above would be harder than altering a few lines of code. It’d also have less immediate visible effect.

Better for the game? Absolutely. More enjoyable for players? Sure. Would it avoid totally trivializing an already dying portion (1-60, even 1-70) of the game? Of course…

This is one of many decisions you see made by MMO designers that are a little too heavily influenced by business, money, and the short term end result.

The funny part, to me, is that Blizzard has the luxury of doing things “right” if they want. There’s no account level crisis here that demands immediate immersion-breaking action.
