Lala

I don’t normally plug any services unless I really enjoy the product and want to see the company succeed. So, I’m going to plug Lala, because all the cool blogs on the internet are doing it.

Lala is a music streaming site, so if you’re not interested in listening to music on your computer you can completely skip this blog post.  It’s not just *another* streaming site though, this one is unique.  I think I’ve tried out every site on the internet (and I’ve been paying $15/month for Rhapsody just to have access to unlimited songs for streaming).  Lala allows you to play every song in it’s gigantic collection one time for free.  After that, it costs you 10 cents to add it to your streaming collection, or 89 cents to purchase the full DRM-free mp3.  You think this is a deal breaker probably (like I did) because who wants to pay for the music?

Well, they also have a Music Mover software that you download (works on Mac and Windows) that scans your mp3s on your computer and adds them to your streaming collection on the web without paying anything.  So, I scanned my hard drive, added my 10,o00 or so songs to Lala, and now I can stream them from anywhere.  I can embed tracks on the web anywhere I want.  And it only costs me 10 cents per song to add tracks to my streaming library and I get 50 free tracks when I first register.

So that’s the important stuff.  Other cool stuff is:

  • No ads on the website at all.  They say it will stay ad-free.
  • iPhone app is apparently coming soon that will allow you to stream your whole collection on your phone as well.
  • They have the whole social network thing down too on the website.  You can add friends, see what they’re listening to, recommend tracks to anyone, make playlists, comment on friends, view feeds of activity, etc.
  • The user interface is fantastic.  You have to try it to understand – it’s snappy and intuitive.

Try it out and add me as a follower.  You can do that by logging in, clicking “People” in the left menu, and searching for Cuppycake.
