Late last year Red Eagle Entertainment announced plans to develop a virtual world based around Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time fantasy series. Today Electronic Arts announced a partnership to distribute the MMOG at retail. Again, it’s not a traditional virtual world, but it does highlight the trend of taking IP from old media into an interactive, ongoing space. Also, as a personal fan, I can’t wait.
“EA Partners is excited to team up with Red Eagle as their global distribution partner for games based on The Wheel of Time series,” said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. “The Wheel of Time series has a massive worldwide following and we’re excited to help give Red Eagle Games’ interactive products a blockbuster launch on the global stage.”

Looks like this might actually see the light of day after all…

A game based on that series could be cool, but I don’t have high hopes. Red Eagle as a company has no experience making games of any sort… I don’t know who they’ve hired. If they’re relying on revenue from the books, then the money will probably be there ’til the end, but otherwise it might be vaporware.
Anyway, I’d rather see a game based on the Death Gate Cycle series by Weis and Hickman.
